This ModEx story is scooting along, another 3000 words last night. Mind you, writing was the last thing I felt like doing when finally sat down at the computer at 9pm last night but it's like I always say, even if you can only write a page or so a day, make yourself do it for the more you write, the easier it becomes. I hadn't written for a few days, hence the difficulty in getting back into it but once I started the words flowed. And before I heard the baby crying for a feed, I'd clocked up the words.
Hmm...now to my dilemma. Well, not actually a dilemma but something I'm a tad concerned about.
Beth, the heroine in this book, is way too feisty. Even when she should be quaking in her boots at getting fired-in fact, even after getting fired last night-she has a quick come-back for her boss. Sure, he can more than handle it but she gives him heaps...all the time! I love that about her but in reality would someone be that much of a smarty pants? Mind you, there is a reason for her behaviour, all tied up to her motivation, but what do you think?
Do you like feisty heroines? And if so, where do you draw the line? All opinions appreciated :)

JD Robb's (aka Nora Roberts) Eve Dallas (from the In Death series) is a fiesty heroine and occassionally I find her annoying but in the end I still love her! I think it's because her feistiness is justified by her horrible past. Also, she is balanced by a softer, warm side as well.
I'd say go for it!
I love a feisty heroine. Stay true to the motivation.
ReplyDeleteI['m in exactly the same boat Nic! The heroine in the Romance I have just begun is doing something so insane when the hero first meets her. I love her, but I have this fear in the back of my head: will everyone love her?

I have the opposite trouble, Nicola. My editor's always telling me to make my heroine's more feisty. Do you think this sort of thing is related to a person's personality? I'm a very quiet person and rarely raise my voice or get all worked up over anything. Just a thought!

ReplyDeleteHowever, I think feisty heroines are great. It's fun to write and read about heroines who say the things we would never dare to utter in real life.

fiesty heroines are more likely to all people as the way you are goes to the way you live with so keeping it along with your self motivation contributes to a large extent just fire them.
