Weekend Book Club: Last Chance

While I'm on my YA kick, I've heard several fans of the genre rave about Sarah Dessen, so this week my copy of 'Last Chance' arrived and I quickly became absorbed.
Sarah's characterisation is superb. Real people to make me smile.
And when the book ended, I was left wanting more: more of their lives, more of their future, just more.
Always a sign of a good book, when the characters stay with you after you've closed the final page.
What are you reading this week?

I'm reading "Blackout" by Connie Willis.
Hard to follow at first b/c there are so many characters, but fabulous science fiction with lots of emotion and less "science." It's all about time travel to England during WWII.
She's one of my favorite authors and I'm glad I stuck with it through the confusing parts.

I'm reading Kate Hardy's Temporary Boss, Permanent Mistress, wonderful characters with beautiful setting in Norway but i'm wondering where the conflict is? I'm hoping i'm not missing something because this is a fabulous read and they each have their own conflict but they aren't clashing with each other yet and it's nearly at the end!

Sounds interesting, Jill.
I haven't heard of Connie Willis. In fact, don't think I've ever read sci-fi.
I love trying new genres though so one to watch out for?

I enjoyed that book, Kerrin, read it a while ago.

Kate's books have a certain special 'something' about them, without the conflict being 'in your face'.
Subtle is good :)

Nicola,
Blackout is part of loosely linked series of books about time travel. All of them have a teeny, teeny bit of romance in them. You can probably read any one of them without reading the others, but the world will make a little more sense is you start with one of the earlier ones. Plus, I heard this one ends in a cliffhanger that isn't resolved until the next book!
"Doomsday Book" is the first. It's about a woman going back to the Middle Ages and dealing with the Plague. Very, very good and as you can imagine very sad. One of my favorite books and it always leaves me teary at the end. I'm not usually a "weepy book" fan, but there is something about this one. It ends with a small note of hope that left me satisfied.
The second book is called "To Say Nothing the Dog" and it is the complete opposite of the first book. It's a screwball comedy romp set in Victorian England.
I recommend them both, but they're both very different, obviously :-)
I've also heard that YA sci-fi is really big right now. I don't know a lot about it outside of Suzanne Collins, but that may be the perfect place for you to start.
Sorry to go on so long, but I love talking book recommendations!

Well, I've been reading a book that I've long wanted to get, but either forgot to look for it when I was in a store, or given it's trade pb price, sometimes I'd say next time because there was something else I wanted more.

Just so happens that Thursday I went to this thrift store where I found it AND it's sequel for a measly $2 or so -- Bridget Jones's Diary. :) The kicker though is I'm slow into getting into it because it is pretty different from the movie. LOL That kind of thing I wouldn't have noticed if I read the book and saw the movie at the same time, but I'm so familiar with the movie that the book is a bit strange to me. However, I will force myself to continue on.

PS - also found at said store, the Daily Show with Jon Stewart's America book that I never got (I won a copy of Steven Colbert's, so I have the set now) and I actually found two SIGNED Sally Ride books. Ah, well, that's exciting to me and only to me because she's the first American woman astronaut and well, did I mention she was an astronaut? LOL So I did dang good there. :)

Jill, don't apologise, this is perfect and exactly why I started the Weekend Book Club.

I love hearing what others are reading and books I can add to my TBR pile :)

so thanks!
