GUEST BLOGGER: Lisa M. Basso

Today I'm thrilled to welcome Lisa M. Basso to my blog.

Lisa is fellow MONTH9BOOKS author and her YA book, A SHIMMER OF ANGELS, has just released.

Welcome Lisa!

Here's a little about the book:

MONTH9BOOKS ANNOUNCES A SHIMMER OF ANGELS: THE PERFECT MIX OF REAL LIFE, PSYCHIATRY and FANTASY in a YA NOVEL

Psychiatry, fantasy and real life come together in A Shimmer of Angels, as a young girl struggles with identity, secrets, and confronting her greatest fears. A Shimmer of Angels is for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or perhaps has felt like giving up entirely. It touches on themes of suicide, ostracism and emotional pain. The author, personally exposed to suicide through the death of a beloved family member, will donate a percentage of sales of this novel to a suicide prevention and outreach program in San Francisco, California.

Month9Books, a publisher of speculative fiction for teens and tweens, announces the release of A SHIMMER OF ANGELS, a debut young adult title from Lisa M. Basso.

Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can't admit to seeing?

Author of THE IRON WITCH, Karen Mahoney, says, “A SHIMMER OF ANGELS has a courageous heroine who finds herself in the middle of two gorgeous angels, a fascinating world, and a story that builds to an exciting climax - I'll be looking forward to more from Lisa M. Basso!"

Music and Writing: How I Use Music

I don't play any instruments, unless you count failed piano lessons in the first grade and a year of playing the recorder in the fourth grade, but I do love to sing. So I would definitely consider myself a musical person, though most people that have heard me sing would probably voice a different opinion. Seriously, I make up songs when I'm doing mundane chores to get me through it. Since I love music in real life, I can't stop myself from incorporating it in my writing.
Each book, character, and scene gets their own playlist or song. These songs help me gather a mood or feeling that I then try to translate into the scene with dialogue, narrative and even setting. For example, when I was doing a character interview with Rayna, the main character in A SHIMMER OF ANGELS, she mentioned to me she loved the band Paramore. When I started writing the first draft, I listened to a lot of Paramore, picking out two specific songs that worked best in the book. This helped me sink deeper into her head, and gave me a good jumping off point for what other bands to look for.
Music keeps me connected to my characters, especially when they have some big decisions to make. Those of you that write know a huge part of a great story is all about your character's decisions. I choose songs for them that remind me who they are and what they want, even if they don't know it yet. Sometimes it's the lyrics I go by, other times it's all guitar, bass, and drums that get me there.
When I'm stumped, that's right, I listen to music. I take a break, walk, exercise, do dishes, laundry, clean, or take a long shower. All while listening to music. A lot of times this unblocks me or at least relaxes me enough that I can stop obsessing over the problem and let a fresh set of ideas come. Turning up the tunes also picks up my spirits after a bad day, writing or otherwise.
During my first draft, I'm usually always listening to music, whether it's a station I created for the book on pandora.com or a specific playlist I made on playlist.com. Now, things get a little complicated when editing comes into play. When I read over the editorial letter and the comments from my editor, I work in complete silence. After this stage is done, it's notebook time and back to cranking up the music.
Unfortunately, not all the songs make it to the final cut. A lot of the them change during revisions, most get edited out, but that doesn't change the fact that I loved them and relied on them before that point. I keep all my old and failed playlists. Who knows when I may need to pluck an older song out of obscurity? Respect the music.
Right now I'm working on compiling a playlist for book three in the Angel Sight series, A MATTER OF TIME. While I'm jotting down important plot points, I'm also making notes on what songs might fit this scene or help me establish the overall mood or goal for the characters.
Music will always be a huge part of writing for me and I hope, as I learn and grow as writer, that this truth will never change, because I couldn't imagine myself typing The End on any book without letting a tear or two slip out while listening to the final song of the book on deathloop and wondering what will happen for these precious characters next.

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY, LISA.
I WISH YOU MANY BOOK SALES!

GUEST BLOGGER: Sue Moorcroft

A warm welcome to Sue Moorcroft today.

BESIDE THE SEASIDE
When I decided to bring Honor Sontag from Connecticut to England, I could have planted her anywhere. I thought about Middledip, the middle-England village where some of my books are set; I thought about London, because a lot of Americans seem to love it. But neither of these seemed quite right for Honor.

It was Robina, a secondary character, who made me decide on Brighton, the small seaside city on the south coast of England. Robina’s an aging hippy, and Brighton has an eclectic and eccentric population where an aging hippy would fit in nicely.

It really wasn’t because my son was going to university in Brighton and I’d have a lot of excuses to visit the area … No, it wasn’t! I knew Honor would love Brighton. She’s an Anglophile and her dad used to take her to England almost every summer vacation, when she was a child. Brighton, with its shingle beach and typically British Palace Pier, would intrigue her. She’s a history major and as well as the Palace Pavilion, where the Prince Regent used to hold outrageously good parties in the early Nineteenth Century, there are castles and historic buildings scattered around surrounding East and West Sussex. But the fact that my son was going to university in Brighton was handy. Not just because I could see more of him than I might otherwise, but because when I was working at home (a three-hour car journey away), he would take photos I needed or check out details.

My editor, who knew the area, queried whether Honor would be able to see the derelict West Pier from the entrance to the Palace Pier, and I was certain that she could. But I sent him a text and he wandered down to the pier to investigate. He rang me: ‘Is she nineteen feet tall? Then, no. There are kiosks in her way.’ I grumbled a bit because I’d really wanted Honor to be able to see the West Pier from the Palace Pier, but at least he stopped me from writing one of those scenes that readers send you messages about, because you’ve got it all wrong.

I did a most of my research myself, of course. I didn’t actually find a tall, dark, hot local guy on which to base Martyn Mayfair, he came out of my imagination. But I spent a lot of time walking along the Undercliff Walk between Rottingdean and Eastingdean (the latter only exists in the book) where Martyn and Honor run together – arguing, mainly – and checking out the coffee shops, because Honor goes to work in one. I chose her a nice little bungalow, overlooking the sea – it belongs to Martyn’s sister – and made myself familiar with the landmarks (the fish and chips are fabulous in the White Horse Hotel) and then …

… I set the rest of the book in America. Where my brother lives.

I love research!

GUEST BLOG: Ali Ahearn

Today I'd like to welcome the fabulous Ali Ahearn (who you may know as Amy Andrews, Harlequin Medical & Riva author, and new Entangled author.) She's here to tell us about her first mainstream novel, SISTER PACT, which I'm dying to read!

Thanks Nic for having me here to talk about Sister Pact.
My sister Ros and I wrote this book in 2009 and its very exciting to finally see it on the shelves – to see it in a Big W catalogue!! To have sold out at our book launch!!

The book is about two estranged sisters having to play nice to win a million pounds each on a Survivor style reality TV show and it was an utterly enjoyable experience for both of us. We laughed and laughed, we got a bit weepy from time to time and we shared incredible moments of synergy. We’ve not long finished the second Joni and Frances instalment and I’m happy to report it was just as good second time around!

Whilst the subject matter in Sister Pact is dealt with in a funny, irreverent kind of way, it does deal with some big issues – infidelity and addiction being two but the most heart wrenching of all is the sister’s estrangement. Well, at least it is to me because the thought of being estranged from Ros makes me feel physically ill. We’ve always been close, but even more so as adults with children of our own and I couldn’t even begin to imagine what could possibly happen to tear us asunder.
Just the thought is unbearable.  She’s my other half. She completes me.
So in honour of that I thought share a little of the sister love around with ten things I love about my sister. In no particular order.

She’s an incredible mother – trust me on this. For someone who I thought was going to be a perpetual career woman she has embraced mother hood with the fiery loins of a true Earth mother!
She has an incredible social conscience – go to the Sisterlit website www.sisterlit.com and go to the sister love page. You’ll see what I mean. She lays awake at night for hours worrying about famine in Africa or Indigenous health here in Australia.
She’s smart – she had 4 degrees including a law degree and a PhD.
She’s witty – she can verbally eviscerate the unsuspecting and do it all with a smile.
She’s politically passionate – she’s actively involved and really cares about what goes on politically around her.
She’s an incredible writer. Her first book blew me away and I know, I just know, some forward thinking publisher is going to pick it up one day. She’s fast and can write a log line or a blurb in about ten minutes flat! And a whole chapter in about 2 hours!!!
She’s an advocate for the underdog. She works in a department that looks after women, poor people and indigenous members of our society when she could be earning mega bucks in a white wig.
She knows how to work a room. Actually, thanks to our mother we both do.
She’s a juggler extraordinaire – part-time work, 3 kids and one on the way, writing sister books, footy, ballet, school, kindy, tuckshop, P&C meetings, fundraisers, home bake etc etc etc
She’s kind. Otherwise she’s just say no to all that stuff and be sane instead!

And I guess her kids and hubby think she’s pretty wonderful too – check out this cute video they uploaded to YouTube for her!
Love you Ros!

Ali and Ros are amazing women.
Go grab SISTER PACT now!
