Weekend Book Club: Perfect Chemistry

PERFECT CHEMISTRY won the RITA this year for Best YA Romance novel and after reading it, I'm not surprised.

The book is fabulous!

Here's the blurb:

Get ready for a whole new take on star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, bad boy meets good girl...

At Fairfield High, everyone knows that south siders and north siders aren’t exactly compatible elements. So when cheerleader Brittany Ellis and gang member Alex Fuentes are forced to be lab partners, the results are bound to be explosive.
Neither teen is prepared for the most surprising chemical reaction of all – love. Can they break through the stereotypes and misconceptions that threaten to keep them apart?

As described on Simone Elkeles website, this story is Romeo & Juliet meets West Side Story but with a happy ending.

The characterisation is superb. Brittany and Alejandro are real, as are their problems. When the author could've taken the easy option, she doesn't, delving deeper into their conflicts and making me turn the pages at a rapid rate (and wishing the story didn't have to end.)

Would love to see this book made into a movie.

What are you reading this week?

Well, it's the weekend. . . and I just finished a contemporary, so you know what that means -- a historical to mention to you! LOL Reading the last book in the same series by Karen Hawkins that I'm pretty sure was last weekend's mention, The Laird Who Loved Me. :)

It sounds great, especially since it has a happy ending. If only I could get Shakespeare to rewrite that last part... Blasphemy, I know, but I like my happy endings.

You put me to shame, Lois, with all the great historical authors I'm yet to read!

Well, with Karen Hawkins, you don't have to start with the historical if that's not overall your thing -- she started writing contemporaries, and I didn't get the first one until the second came out, but geez are they fun. Without looking, I forget the first title, but the second is Lois Lane Tells All (I think LOL); the heroine isn't named Lois Lane, but since she's a journalist, strives to be like Lois Lane. But anyway, definitely funny stuff. :)
