Weekend Book Club: Girl Saves Boy

I'm blown away that this book was written by a 16 yo teenager.

Not because of the language or the way it was written but for the subject matter and the realistic way it is explored.

Here's the blurb:

The first time we met, Jewel Valentine saved my life.

Isn’t it enough having your very own terminal disease, without your mother dying? Or your father dating your Art teacher? No wonder Sacha Thomas ends up in the lake that Saturday evening…But the real question is: how does he end up in love with Jewel Valentine?
With the help of quirky teenage prodigies Little Al and True Grisham, Sacha and Jewel have a crazy adventure, with a little lobster emancipation along the way.
But Sacha’s running out of time, and Jewel has secrets of her own.
Girl Saves Boy is a hugely talented debut novel, funny and sad, silly and wise. It’s a story of life, death, love… and garden gnomes.

Melburnian Steph Bowe takes a heavy subject and injects it with just enough humour to have you turning pages in her wonderful YA debut.

Her very real characters explore a complex range of emotions in a beautiful, poignant, readable way.

What are you reading this week?

I just finished "Flipped" by Wendelin Van Draanen. It was adorable. I was in the mood for some "sweet" young romance story. This was probably even more "pre YA" than YA, but it was just what a I wanted.

I'm finishing up a review book, Wish You Were Here by Phillipa Ashley, but also started The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking -- definitely not historical. ;) And only finally getting to it - think it came out last December... LOL

Wow. It's amazing to think that a 16yo wrote that. Must add that one to my TBR pile.

Sounds like a middle grade novel, Jill?

Sometimes it's great to read something so sweet :)

Must be hard juggling your review books with personal reading, Lois?

Wait till you read it, Lacey, you'll be even more amazed.

Totally blew me away a 16 yo had written it.

(and made me feel a tad inadequate but sshh...don't tell anyone!) ;)

Not really -- I basically only read one book at a time, but this time since I was towards the end of the review one, I wanted to start the next. But these are two totally different subjects (contemporary romance vs astrophysics) that it would really crazy to confuse them. LOL And I try to limit what review books I get; the one regular list that I get is from Sourcebooks, and I'll say not this month if I just think I better not or something. So, I try to keep everything doable that way. :)
